While my younger kid Sharon was growing up I could feel that she had an extra bout of energy for every hour of the day. After exploring all possible options to divert this additional energy positively, the idea which attracted me most was to enroll her into martial arts. So there I was at the premises of the martial art academy. I had reached there with an intention to find out if it was actually a very good idea. And mind you reaching there was not a very easy task. I don’t mean that there were physical obstacles which were stopping me but yes, you have guessed it right, mental distractions were many. Yeah being a mother of a cute petite, hyper active daughter is sure to bring a lot of worries especially when you are surrounded by myths like shoulders and palms would become big and that her height would be stunted if she learns karate.
Before the visit to preschool martial arts San Antonio, I had to really convince myself that it was just a myth and this is how I established this fact. First of all, I did a lot of Google search. Though I didn’t get any direct link between the two yet I came across many interesting facts about this form of art. And I must agree I am a great fan of it more than ever before. However, as the chances of the theory being different from reality are large I thought of doing some practical research too. So next what I felt it would be good idea to in fact check the height of the trainers who are teaching and indulging into regular karate practice. If Karate had to do something with reducing height then these grand masters ought to be of short-height. To my relief all the five karate teachers whom I met through various contact were exceeding 6 feet. So the height myth was taken care of.
The other criteria was the largeness of palms and shoulders. So when I found that one aspect of the rumor was falsified I assumed the other must be untrue as well. Thus I decided to check regarding this directly from the horse’s mouth i.e. from the instructors of the academy of San Antonio family karate. So I when I met them I was quite prompt to clear my apprehension regarding the expansion of the body parts. He responded with a cool smile and this made me a little uncomfortable. Later I realized that this was a very popular myth and he was just appreciative of the fact that I was a concerned parent who was utterly careful about the nitty gritty.
However, he patiently explained that this is a misconception and confirmed that deformity of body parts is entirely baseless. To elucidate that he again resorted introducing me to female students practicing the beautiful art continuously for past 3-4 years. Moreover, he added probably sometimes in instances of hardcore martial arts practitioners who train for 12 hours a day rarely might accidently have an injured hand or feet while punching the punching bag or kicking a tree etc, but these are just exceptions.
He reassured me that my daughter will surely be benefitted through this training as this will imbibe discipline in her. There can be a bit of physical exertion through drills and exercises, but we know how important that is for a child’s development. And in fact, this is how her energy would be used proactively or positively. This made me realize, how demanding being a mother could be and more than that how exhausting it can be, to deal with myths.
